Effective Direct Mail Marketing Strategies to Boost Your Business

What is Direct Mail Marketing?

Direct mail marketing is the production of advertising materials to be physically sent to the targeted home mailbox using the USPS or various delivery companies. The goal is to get the recipient to convert on the sale of a product or service from the business advertised. The advertising materials can consist of many different types such as postcards, flyers, letters, catalogs, brochures, and much more.

Does Direct Mail Still work?

Direct mail has one of the best response rates out of the current marketing channels available today. Direct mail has an average response rate of 5.1% or more compared to email at .06% and display ads at .02%. With so much saturation in digital marketing, direct mail has made a strong comeback with marketers. For the best ROI combine Direct Mail with other digital avenues for a personalized omni-channel campaign.

What businesses and organizations use Direct Mail?

According to a 2015 study by the Data & Marketing Association in partnership with the United States Postal Service, 57 percent of total mail volume was direct mail. The percentage has been climbing steadily for years. Some of the top direct mail industries are Real Estate Brokers & Agents, Car Dealerships, Charities, and Medical Offices.

Can Direct Mail be paired with Digital Advertising?

Pairing Direct Mail with digital marketing such as Social Media, Email, Display ads, etc creates an omni-channel approach to reach potential consumers. Consumers want to see the same branding and messaging across all platforms that they may come in contact with. There are several ways that can be implemented with direct mail to drive consumers to digital channels or physical stores.

Data Processing and Mailing List Management

Having clean and up to date data is crucial to the success of any mailing campaign. Our data processing department will clean, process, merge, standardize, and make your mailing lists compliant. We can also create a custom mailing list to meet the prospecting needs of your campaign. By using software with postal certifications we can CASS certify to verify addresses and NCOA (national change of address) the mailing records to make sure that the pieces are making it to the intended people. Once that is achieved we can presort the data which allows for an Intelligent Mail Barcode (IMB) to be placed on the piece for postage discounts.

Different Classes of Mail

First Class Mail is the fastest option for delivery. Usually delivered 2-3 days locally and up to 4 days nationwide. First Class comes with mail forwarding and return to sender. Businesses also have the option to mail as Certified Mail.

If there are more than 500 pieces in a First Class mailing it can be presorted to receive a lower postage rate and receive the same benefits of First Class. To achieve a lower rate, the addresses have to be CASS/NCOA certified.

Marketing Mail is also known as "Standard mail". Each mailing has to have a minimum quantity of 200 pieces to qualify. This class is used for marketing mail such as postcards, letters, flyers, catalogs, and other advertising. Standard Mail is usually delivered locally within 3-6 business days. Nationally it can take 1-3 weeks.

Non Profit Mail has the lowest postage rate of all class of mail.  Organizations have to be registered and authorized by the US Postal Service to mail at this rate. It is processed and delivered the same way as Marketing Mail.
